This MLK weekend join BYP100 NYC as we #ReclaimMLK and reclaim the legacy of the Freedom Struggle, examine why their radical dreams are still unfulfilled, and re-imagine what that dream could concretely look like today.
Every year, the NYPD collects over $1B in fines and fees from poor Black and brown NYC residents, then turns around and uses that money to surveil, assault, harass, and kill us. They then spend $428M over the course of five years in court settlements to cover up the violence they inflict on us. 50 years ago, MLK proclaimed that our country could choose one of two paths - chaos or community. One America would have you believe that we have reached a promised post-racial community, but for those of us in the other America being suffocated and killed by state violence, we know that we are in a state of chaos. As Dr. King said, "Direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community, which has constantly refused to negotiate, is forced to confront the issue."
Join BYP100 NYC as we use forum theater as a tactic to show just how chaotic and tense our city and our country are. Audience members are invited to intervene at different points in the performance and take direct action to attempt to change the outcome of the story. Come watch, complicate, and challenge with us!
