The Movement for Black Lives in DC is continually calling on the city to DIVEST from the police and INVEST in Black communities. The city spends over $500 million on the police and less than $200 million on affordable housing. This same city gives away valuable public land to developers while Black residents are getting displaced from their homes. We say NO MORE!
We're gonna TURN UP in front of the Reeves Center (which was given away to developers FOR FREE) to DC's indigenous music, GO-GO, to protest the ban and displacement of the genre that resulted from a criminalization of Black culture. It's by design that Go-Go Clubs in D.C. have been shut down/or moved to Maryland. Go-Go doesn't fit in this "new vision of D.C." so we're reclaiming OUR vision. We're gonna TURN UP to tell Muriel Bowser that she gotta Go-Go!!
We are hosting this direct action in solidarity with BYP100 Chapters and BLM Chapters across the country. With our united power, we declare the necessity to re-claim the radical legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. We encourage you to use and follow the hashtag #ReclaimMLK to connect with all of the Movement for Black Lives actions happening around the country this weekend.
This event is a collaboration between Stop Police Terror Project, ONE DC, BYP100, ThinkMoor, Black Movement Law Project, and BLM DMV.
